Johns Hopkins Talent Development Middle Schools (JHTDMS): MATHEMATICS
Johns Hopkins' Approach
Talent Development Secondary’s math program encourages students’ conceptual understanding of key ideas that underlie all high school mathematics and sharpens their overall basic mathematical skills. Our mathematics initiative challenges students to think through and understand what they are doing, learn from one another, communicate and respect ideas, and make connections between mathematics and the world.
Talent Development Secondary supports evidenced-based mathematics curricula that meet the Common Core Standards for the middle grades. There is not a specific Talent Development middle grades mathematics sequence. The Talent Development Secondary Math Acceleration Lab, Think Through Math (TTM), provides extra help for students who need it. Students attend the lab during the school day for 10 to 20 weeks. Several sections of the math lab may be scheduled as needed.

The TDMG mathematics program recommends the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP) Everyday Mathematics in fifth and sixth grade, Transition Mathematics in seventh grade, and UCSMP Algebra in eighth grade. This curriculum is aligned with National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards. Talent Development Middle Grades provides extensive teacher support, including TDMG-created lesson plans and supplementary units.
Other math programs supported by TDMG include Connected Math, Math In Context, and Mathscapes.
The TDMG CATAMA (Computer and Team Assisted Mathematics Acceleration) Lab provides extra help to enable students meet the high standards of TDMG curriculum. Students respond enthusiastically to these elective, ten-week “double dose” classes.
